The Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation (CERA) and the National Right to Housing Network (NRHN) are working with communities across Canada to identify systemic violations of the right to housing, propose solutions, and claim the right to housing as recognized under the National Housing Strategy Act (NHSA), to secure systemic change. NHSA is the first legislation in Canada to identify housing as a fundamental human right as recognized under international human rights law.
CERA and NRHN are running a series of regional workshops across Canada to identify systemic issues in each province and territory. This regional workshop will bring together housing advocates, lawyers, community leaders and people with lived experience from the territories of Northwest Territories and Yukon to discuss the systemic issues faced by renters in the province, including Indigenous people, women-led households, persons with disabilities, members of racialized groups, immigrants and refugees, members of LGBTQ2S+ communities, and those with low incomes. This conversation will also focus on how the right to housing can be claimed under the NHSA. To work toward this end in Northwest Territories and Yukon, CERA and NRHN are collaborating with the Keepers of the Circle, Safe at HomeYukon and the Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition to organize this meeting.
The workshop is being organized on September 15, 2021, from 3:00-5:30 PM EST (12:00-2:30 PM in Whitehorse, 1:00-3:30 PM in Yellowknife). Please save the date in your calendar, we hope you can join us for the meeting!
